In the summer it is hot and rainy. The winter can get chilly, but not very cold.
You walk a ton, so invest in good shoes! You often walk on dirt and uneven roads. They should be waterproof.
Elders: ECCO and Rockport shoes have been mentioned as holding up well in the heat and rain.
Elders: take more short sleeved shirts than long.
Bring 2 sets of bedsheets including pillowcases.
Don’t worry about shampoo and soap, but do bring toothpaste.
The mission provides every apartment with filtered water, so bring a water bottle to fill there or some missionaries prefer to bring a filtered water bottle and extra filters.
Missionaries typically have a pensionista that makes their meals.

Most parents send their Elders with at least 1 suit (most countries in South America only wear suits to church and meetings) and around 8–10 golf pants. Families are sending more shirts because of heat and humidity — 12–14 is the average. Note for Sisters serving in Brazil: feminine hygiene products are expensive there and tampons are often considered taboo. Be prepared to send a good supply with your Sister Missionary.

Serve shirts have a ventilation panel in the side of the shirt making them noticeably more breathable. Missionaries serving in hot or humid places absolutely RAVE about this feature. The most popular shirt for hot-climate missions, for sure.
