It rains a lot in this mission! You should have a REALLY good raincoat. Missionaries can either purchase one at home or wait until they get to their mission to purchase one.
Shoe recommendations are to get really comfortable shoes that can hold up in lots of walking and are waterproof. For both Sisters and Elders, Dr. Martens are recommended a lot. Blundstone also makes an excellent waterproof and warm boot.
Culturally speaking, British football (soccer) is VERY important. People don't like to be bothered during games. Sometimes missionaries are required to stay inside on game nights due to potential riots and fighting. But, learning about football is a pretty important way to connect with the people here.
Some language things:
Pants are underwear there.
Tea Time is dinner. If they ask if you want to stay for tea time, it is for a meal.
Cuppa is a cut of tea. Just politely ask for water or herbal tea instead.
dinner is lunch.
