Birmingham has mild summers and cold winters with A LOT of rain throughout the year.
Because of the rain, it is also dark a lot. Seasonal depression can be an issue, so bring extra LED lights for your flat.
The temperature rarely drops below freezing, but the humidity and wind makes it feel colder and can be quite biting, so pack clothing that can be layered with extra sweaters and thermal garments.
You will want a waterproof coat. It is best to purchase that in the mission field as the coats will be truly waterproof instead of just water resistant. A 3 in 1 coat is nice so that it can be adjusted for warmer weather as well. A hood on your coat is preferred.
A good, sturdy umbrella is pretty important. Make sure it can withstand the wind, though.
Electronics like shavers, hair dryers and curling irons can either be purchased there so they have the correct voltage or if brought along, be mindful to check the voltage as not to ruin it.
Dr. Martens are recommended as the best shoe for both Elders and Sisters. But any comfortable and durable shoe will work, just make sure it is waterproof. A waterproof Chelsea boot is also a good everyday shoe to have in the winter.
You will be doing a lot of walking, using public transportation, and biking in some areas. There are big cities and also smaller towns.
The accent is a little harder to understand at first, but you get used to it quickly.
