It is hot and humid in the summer. The rainy season is during the summer. It can get quite chilly in the winter and apartments do not have heat. The temperatures usually don’t drop too low, but with the moisture, it feels really cold.
They have crazy hills with rough terrain. The sidewalks are crazy chunks of gravel and bricks. This makes missionaries go through shoes! You want shoes with good soles and support.
Elders: Ecco and Rockport have been recommended as holding up best. You will still need several pair though. During the rainy season, make sure to rotate your shoes giving them time to dry out. A shoe dryer could be beneficial.
Sisters: Chacos or Tevas are recommended highly. Bring several pair, like 3. You will want a pair of closed toed shoes for the colder times as well as good socks. Dr. Marten Mary Jane’s are frequently mentioned.
Also bring flip flops for wearing around the apartment.
Rain boots with good traction is recommended for the rainy cold months.
You will want light, breathable clothing for most of the year. However, it can get quite cold with the humidity. Gloves, sweaters, and a zip out coat will be nice for winter.
Sisters: prefer dresses when it’s hot. But a couple pairs of pants are nice to have too.
Warm sweaters and sleeping clothes will be needed too.
Sisters: Brazil does have pads, but not tampons, so be prepared with a supply if that is your preference. Consider bringing period underwear.
Bring a sturdy umbrella. Cheap ones break easily and ones purchased there don’t hold up either.
Bring enough deodorant and ibuprofen to last the entire mission.
You’ll appreciate socks and hoodies for sleeping when it gets chilly.
You will want good mosquito repellent and bug spray to treat bedding. Also bring sunscreen.
Even though the temple is technically outside mission boundaries, they do get to attend every couple of transfers.
Amazon Brazil works well for sending things to the mission office. The secretaries are not always there. You need to inform Amazon the times of working. You can put

Most parents send their Elders with at least 1 suit (most countries in South America only wear suits to church and meetings) and around 8–10 golf pants. Families are sending more shirts because of heat and humidity — 12–14 is the average. Note for Sisters serving in Brazil: feminine hygiene products are expensive there and tampons are often considered taboo. Be prepared to send a good supply with your Sister Missionary.
This is a very comfortable, durable shoe that missionaries serving all over have loved!
7 inch Rechargeable Fan. These have been recommended for missionaries serving in Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Africa. They help keep you cooler at night, but also help keep bugs like mosquitos off at night too.
The power goes out frequently, so it is nice to have a solar power fan.
This is a good rain jacket to have if you need the zip-out liner functionality.
Serve shirts have a ventilation panel in the side of the shirt making them noticeably more breathable. Missionaries serving in hot or humid places absolutely RAVE about this feature. The most popular shirt for hot-climate missions, for sure.
