HOT and Humid. It rains pretty much constantly. There are a few places where it doesn’t rain as much, but mostly be prepared to be wet. Get good rain gear.
Often the roads and paths are wet and sometimes flooded, so get good, waterproof shoes. It is a heavy walking mission. A shoe dryer is so nice to have.
Elders: a higher waterproof hiking boot is nicer than dress shoes for every day.
Sisters are allowed to wear sandals, and wear Chacos or Tevas.
Wear light weight breathable fabric. Currently Sisters are not allowed to wear pants (6/2026).
Portable, rechargeable fans for sleeping are invaluable.
Deodorant is different there, so you will want a full missions worth. They do not have Benadryl there. Even if you are not susceptible to allergies, bring allergy medications and cold medicines with you.
The heat isn’t so bad, but the sun can really beat down on you, so bring a sun hat.
Sisters: feminine hygiene products are expensive. Tampons are not easily found so bring your mission supply with you. Consider a disc or cup.
The people are simple and humble.

Most parents send their Elders with at least 1 suit (most countries in South America only wear suits to church and meetings) and around 8–10 golf pants. Families are sending more shirts because of heat and humidity — 12–14 is the average. Note for Sisters serving in Brazil: feminine hygiene products are expensive there and tampons are often considered taboo. Be prepared to send a good supply with your Sister Missionary.
7 inch Rechargeable Fan. These have been recommended for missionaries serving in Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Africa. They help keep you cooler at night, but also help keep bugs like mosquitos off at night too.
The power goes out frequently, so it is nice to have a solar power fan.
Serve shirts have a ventilation panel in the side of the shirt making them noticeably more breathable. Missionaries serving in hot or humid places absolutely RAVE about this feature. The most popular shirt for hot-climate missions, for sure.
