The summers are warm, humid and rainy. The winters can be cold, damp, and windy. Without central heat, it can get quite cold, especially those serving in some of the higher elevation areas.
Bring a waterproof coat with a zip out liner or a coat and a separate rain jacket. Hold off purchasing a super warm coat to see if you’ll need it in the area you are serving.
Missionaries often carry sling bags that are waterproof, however, some prefer a waist bag to save you from back sweat.
You will walk a lot! Invest in a couple pairs of good comfy shoes and DURABLE socks, rain boots (Bogs recommended), and some black tennis shoes.
You will also want shower shoes or slides. Slides can also be worn around the apartment.
Pack some sweaters. Sisters often request more pants than what they initially brought with them.
Deodorant there does not work well, so bring what you need with you.
A insulated filtered water bottle with extra filters is very nice, especially in the summer.
A pillow, pillow case and mattress cover are given upon arrival at the mission office, but missionaries are responsible for their own sheets. Consider also bringing a small comfortable travel pillow and pillow case and a blanket. The pillows are not super comfortable and an extra blanket is nice in the winter.
Pack a couple quick drying microfiber towels and hand towels.
You will need a waterproof sling bag for every day, but also a backpack for transfers and exchanges.
Most apartments do not have drawers to use and packing cubes really come in handy for storing your clothes.
Bring an extra portable charger.
You need C, I, and A types of adapters.
Bug repellent lotion/spray is important.
Sisters: tampons do not have applicators, so bring your supply or consider a flex disc or menstrual cup.

Most parents send their Elders with at least 1 suit (most countries in South America only wear suits to church and meetings) and around 8–10 golf pants. Families are sending more shirts because of heat and humidity — 12–14 is the average. Note for Sisters serving in Brazil: feminine hygiene products are expensive there and tampons are often considered taboo. Be prepared to send a good supply with your Sister Missionary.
Serve shirts have a ventilation panel in the side of the shirt making them noticeably more breathable. Missionaries serving in hot or humid places absolutely RAVE about this feature. The most popular shirt for hot-climate missions, for sure.
