The weather is all the things. It is hot, humid, and cold. It does rain A LOT!
A GOOD raincoat is essential. One that is a little long is nice to keep you dry.
Layers for winter, and lightest clothes for summer. It is humid, so it can feel VERY cold, and VERY hot.
Sisters often comment that they wish they had taken more pants.
Bring sweaters for layering in the cold months.
It is a heavy walking mission and they go through multiple pairs of shoes. Get good shoes or more of a hiking boot/shoe and a winter boot.
Ecco brand has been mentioned as holding up well for Elders.
Hunter rain boots and Dansko for Sisters have been recommended.
They can find good replacement shoes there though.
Missionaries are given clear bags to carry around (to avoid being robbed), but having an extra small bag is nice to have for church or meetings as well.
Bring a pair of slippers, slides, or sandals for wearing around the apartment. The floor is often dirty and you’ll want to have something to put on after long days of walking.
There are a lot of bugs, but spray is available there to buy. Anti-itch cream is harder to find, though.
Take deodorant to last the entire mission.
Sisters: pads are available, but tampons are hard to find, so bring a supply if that is what you are used to. Period underwear is nice to have here, or consider a menstrual cup or disc.

Most parents send their Elders with at least 1 suit (most countries in South America only wear suits to church and meetings) and around 8–10 golf pants. Families are sending more shirts because of heat and humidity — 12–14 is the average. Note for Sisters serving in Brazil: feminine hygiene products are expensive there and tampons are often considered taboo. Be prepared to send a good supply with your Sister Missionary.
Serve shirts have a ventilation panel in the side of the shirt making them noticeably more breathable. Missionaries serving in hot or humid places absolutely RAVE about this feature. The most popular shirt for hot-climate missions, for sure.
