There are mild summers, and long, very cold winters.
During the winter months, you will experience little daylight, and in the summer, little darkness. It messes with sleep schedules a bit.
Only missionaries with a passport will be able to serve in the Yukon (Canada) next door, but it is part of the mission.
Get good boots, like thermal lined Blundstones or Sorels. A heated vest and gloves are nice to have as well.
Make sure your coat is rated for arctic temps. RefrigiWear makes coats rated for -50 degrees, but there are other companies that also make good coats for the cold as well.
