Tokyo South is a very urban mission and does not have areas out in the more rural parts of Japan. It is very humid and rainy. It is subject to typhoons as well. It is not super snowy, but it does get very cold with the humidity.
Missionaries use bikes and trains. Bike clips for pant legs are very useful as you bike a ton in this mission.
Waterproof biking gloves are super nice to have in the winter and rain. Gor-Tex gloves work well.
You will want truly waterproof clothing and shoes, not just water resistant.
Shoes are removed before entering homes, so shoes that are easy to put on and take off are important.
Dr. Martens are the most recommended shoe for Elders (dress boot style) and Sisters.
There is a summer rainy season and a winter rainy season. In the summer, rain boots can add extra unwanted heat. Many Elders prefer the dress boots. But in the winter rainy season, get boots that are WATERPROOF and come above the ankle. Blundstone boots are easy to take off and put on and are excellent in the cold. Sisters also like Hunter rain boots for the rain. When it rains it really pours!
Get moisture wicking socks.
Also, a cedar shoe tree can really help with preventing mold and absorbing moisture.
For transfers, they use a courier service, so they do not take luggage on trains.
The Timbuk2 or Carhartt bag is recommended as a great everyday carry bag. Or a waist lumbar bag or fanny pack that is easy to have on bikes is liked by Elders and Sisters.
It can get quite cold with the humidity. You will want a waterproof coat and gloves as well as things for layering, such as thermals and sweaters. Fleece lined tights for Sisters.
Japan has long underwear called “Heat tech” that is a thin material that retains the heat and is fabulous for the cold.
Consider waiting to purchase a rain suit there (unless you are a larger size) as they have more appropriate rain suits than can be found in the U.S.
The shopping there is fantastic. You can find everything you will need with lots of thrift stores.
However, bring toothpaste and deodorant to last entire mission. The shipping for an entire mission's supply is more than the deodorant. They do not have similar products there and is the most requested item for missionaries. Tampons are also difficult to find there.
